This flute took about 6 weeks to build, primarily due to my sketchy work ethic, and a shop temperature of 52° F.. I call it the crouching pony, because to carve a standing horse for the fetish, would have invited easy breakage of the legs. It is a horse…it is not a pig.
The material is a Peruvian hardwood known as huangana negra. I’ve used it a lot. Additional woods in the build include cocobolo between layers of SE Asian amboyna burl, Oklahoma red cedar, and mappa burl.
In addition to extensive colorized pyrographics, inlay includes an amalgam stone of spiny oyster, copper, and turquoise, abalone, hematite, labradorite, faceted Brazilian topaz and Australian fire opal as well.
The flute is 24-5/8” in length, with a 1” bore diameter, tuned to Dm.
